Housing Investments in Markham-Stouffville

Canada’s first ever National Housing Strategy is a 10-year, $40-billion+ plan that will give more Canadians a place to call home.  Across Canada, there are still 1.7 million Canadian households in housing need.  In York Region, the cost of housing continues to rise at a rapid rate, and I understand the major concern this is for many constituents.

In Budget 2016, The Renovate and Retrofit program was announced to ensure existing social housing units meet health and safety and other regulatory requirements.  Over $500,000 has been invested in Markham-Stouffville, which has helped keep 345 units available to area residents, now and over the long-term.

Over $170,000 has been invested in co-operative housing in the riding.  The program allows the co-op to provide a subsidy program, ensuring that there are affordable housing options in our area, particularly for families.

I recently held a Housing Roundtable with MP Adam Vaughan, who serves as the Parliamentary Secretary for Families, Children & Social Development.  He shared inspiring housing stories from across the country and outlined how to apply for programs such as the National Housing Co-Investment Fund.  I look forward to supporting local stakeholder groups who are applying for this fund, and will continue to advocate for housing investments in York Region, and in particular, Markham-Stouffville.
