I am sorry that I cannot be with you at the Children’s Unity Celebration this evening, but I am very grateful that such a wonderful event could be organized.
In coming together for this celebration of hope, peace and unity, you are sending a message loud and clear—that racism and hate speech have no place in our community. The recent acts of vandalism at a number of local schools do not represent our shared values—values like diversity, inclusion and showing kindness towards others. These acts do not have a place in Markham.
Tonight is an example of the fantastic way our community rallies together to show that each and every person is welcome here, and that hate is never acceptable. When we come together, we are stronger. When we celebrate diversity, we are stronger.
I hope that you all enjoy the evening, and thank you to everyone for coming out to show your support for our community.
